Nora Fisher-Onar is Assistant Professor of International Studies at the University of San Francisco. Her research interests include international relations, comparative politics, foreign policy analysis, political ideologies, gender, and comparative area studies (Middle East & Europe). She received her doctorate in IR from Oxford, and holds masters and undergraduate degrees in applied international affairs from Johns Hopkins (SAIS) and Georgetown universities, respectively.

Fisher-Onar is author of the forthcoming book Pluralism in Turkey: Islam, Liberalism and Nationalism (Cambridge University Press, 2021) and editor of the volume, Istanbul: Living With Difference in a Global City (Rutgers University Press, 2018). She has published extensively in academic journals like Conflict and Cooperation, Millennium, Theory and Society, Women’s Studies International Forum, and Middle East Studies.

Fisher-Onar also speaks regularly at policy fora like Brookings, Carnegie, and the German Marshall Fund (GMF) where she has served as a Ronald Asmus Policy Entrepreneur Fellow, Transatlantic Academy Fellow, and Non-Residential Fellow. She contributes frequent commentary to platforms like the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, National Interest, and OpenDemocracy.

Fisher-Onar, who speaks five languages, has travelled to over 80 and lived in eight countries.
