A conversation with Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell on the international aspects of his work.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is the largest in the world with approximately 18,000 employees and the responsibility to secure 18,000 inmates every day. Its International Liaison Unit utilizes "police diplomacy" to connect with police agencies around the world, exchange resources, training, and experience between nations, offer support to over 110 embassies and consulates and notify them of the arrests and deaths of foreign nationals within L.A. County, follow protocols of consular notification and diplomatic immunity, and provide multilingual interpreter services.
How is the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department working to address international issues such as human trafficking, cyber-crime, homeless populations, and many others that continue to be challenges in the region? How has Los Angeles’ transformation into a global city impacted the work of Sheriff McDonnell and his department?
