The Pacific Council is a nonpartisan organization with a deep commitment to international affairs, the principles of democracy, and free and open discussion. Previous Pacific Council speakers have included U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (1997-2001), UK Prime Minister Tony Blair (1997-2007), U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (2009-2013), U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (2005-2009), Irish President Mary Robinson (1990-1997), who also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002), and many others.
President George W. Bush’s long career includes service as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He was elected as the 46th Governor of Texas in 1994 and later became the first governor in Texas history to be elected to consecutive four-year terms.
President Bush presided over a transitional period in American history. As commander-in-chief during the tragic events of 9/11, Bush oversaw the nation's political, diplomatic, and military responses throughout his term in office. President Bush is recognized for a number of foreign policy accomplishments, including delivering more assistance to Africa than any other U.S. president at $5 billion a year in humanitarian aid, and establishing the successful PEPFAR program to combat HIV/AIDS on the continent. Bush also signed a historic agreement with India permitting civilian nuclear cooperation, reversing 30 years of the existing nonproliferation policy.
