A Situation Briefing teleconference on the impending impeachment of beleaguered Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

On April 17, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of the National Congress) voted to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, throwing the country further into political turmoil. Rousseff has been dogged by allegations that she broke banking regulations. Many of Brazil’s politicians are embroiled in corruption scandals, including former President Lula da Silva, who is accused of receiving “illicit benefits” from a kickback scheme at Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras. Rousseff recently named da Silva her chief of staff, but on Wednesday Brazil’s Supreme Court suspended a meeting that was to decide his appointment to her cabinet. Now Rousseff’s impeachment case goes to the Senate, where it is expected to be approved, which would effectively remove her from office. Rousseff will make her case to the United Nations on April 29 in New York.
