On April 23, students from USC Hybrid High School came to the Pacific Council’s office for a roundtable discussion on international policy and what the Council does on a day-to-day basis. This was an opportunity for both the students and the Council to discuss the vast career paths that exist in the international affairs industry and the potential that is here in Los Angeles.
Pacific Council staff from various departments attended and told the students about the work they do at the Council and how previous educational, volunteer, and professional experiences have led them to this point in their careers. Students also went around the room introducing themselves and sharing their careers of interest. Many of the students stated they were interested in law, journalism, medicine, and women's empowerment.
While these students were only 14 and 15 years of age, the questions and maturity they showed deeply impressed the Pacific Council staff in attendance. The USC Hybrid students expressed curiosity in how careers like law and medicine can be tied in with international policy and what resources they can use to enhance their knowledge on these topics.
The Pacific Council believes that education is one pathway to address the ever-changing needs and population of a global Los Angeles. As foreign policy education opportunities are rarely available in a high school setting, this partnership with USC Hybrid High is one special initiative the Council is exploring in order to provide Los Angeles youth with the skills necessary for diplomacy, policymaking, and applied-learning opportunities.
Hosting this roundtable discussion and hearing the enthusiasm from the USC Hybrid High students makes the Pacific Council excited to see the future leaders Los Angeles has and what more the Council can do as an organization to further cultivate younger generations in becoming global citizens.
As the special initiatives department continues growing this partnership and looks to the future, the Pacific Council hopes to expand such community education initiatives and plans to open up volunteer opportunities for our members to participate and help prepare young people for careers related to foreign policy.
