A Situation Briefing teleconference on the future of U.S. policy and objectives in the Asia-Pacific under the Trump administration.
The Obama administration's signature policy in the Asia-Pacific was a "rebalance" to reflect the growing importance of the region to U.S. national interests. President-elect Donald J. Trump's "America First" foreign policy is poised to take the United States in a different direction. Trump has signaled a "more transactional, narrow approach to [U.S.] relationships [in Asia] based largely on greater burden-sharing," according to The Diplomat. Trump's more aggressive stance towards China has alarmed Beijing, especially as it relates to diplomatic recognition of Taiwan and the looming prospect of a trade war with the United States. And it remains to be seen how the Trump administration will interact with key players like President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines and other ASEAN leaders.
Will the U.S. "rebalance to Asia" continue under President Trump? How will the new administration's policies affect relations with China and the ASEAN nations?
