A Situation Briefing teleconference on the rising popularity—and potential pitfalls—of emerging cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
Bitcoin. Ethereum. Bitcoin Cash. Ripple. These cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies, among many others, are changing the way people think about economic privacy, security, government currency monopolies, and the global financial system. With digital asset trade becoming an increasingly global phenomenon, it is imperative that the international financial regime develop policies to address the challenges that these new technologies raise.
What does an effective government approach to the rise of cryptocurrencies look like? Will these technologies provide financial security outside of government, or will they leave consumers vulnerable to loss and corruption? Given the need for national-level digital currencies to be interoperable, how can unified policies be developed? What is required in terms of international cooperation?
